If you’re in Toronto this Thursday evening and would like to be entertained, you’re invited to the Naval Club’s Silent Auction and Benefit Concert in support of the Beach’s Glen Davis Ravine.

I’ve donated a signed and dated poster-size print of “Willow Avenue” to the Silent Auction. I personally output the print this morning. It’s current value is $500.00 which will increase the longer you own it.

ABOUT THE IMAGE AND PRINT
“Willow Avenue” is part of the “Winter in the Beach Collection”, a series of images capturing the beauty of the Beach neighbourhood during winter. “Willow Avenue” was captured in February of 2007, a couple of hours after a huge snow storm. The image was captured digitally and then enhanced in post production by the photographer.

The current value of the Poster Print is Cdn$500.00.

The 13×19″ Poster Print has been created and signed by the Artist. It was created on August 2 2011, and is noted on the print. It has been produced on textured fine-art photographic paper. The print is rated to last 100 years (per manufacturer’s extensive testing) when professionally matted and framed, and displayed in proper conditions.

The Artist will mat and frame the print upon request by the winner.

ABOUT THE BENEFIT CONCERT and SILENT AUCTION
Starts at 7pm. Tickets are $10 at the door. It’s taking place at the Naval Club, 1910 Gerrard Street East, Toronto this Thursday August 4th.

Maybe I’ll see you there!

Last night’s book launch of Cancer Connections: Images of hope and courage from across Canada, was a success. The First Canadian Place Gallery was over-flowing with people who attended the event. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the close of the nationwide exhibit, which criss-crossed the country over two years. The images, words, and the project itself, now takes on a new life forever documented in its book form. It’ll always be a source of hope and courage for those touched by cancer.

As a contributing photographer to the exhibition and book, it was lovely to speak with partners in the project, as well as fellow photographers and cancer survivors. Such stories of bravery, compassion, and love. My father passed away from cancer before I became involved with Cancer Connections. The thought of photographing him during his last days entered my mind for only a fleeting moment. There was simply no way I wanted to document him during his last days. Some of the portraits in Cancer Connections portray those who didn’t survive the disease. That in itself is a testament to the human spirit.

The book is gorgeous. As much as I love my Kindle, this book must be owned in it’s original 11 x 11″ hard-cover version. It would never work as an e-book unless manufacturers eventually make a large format e-book reader (Apple’s iPad doesn’t make it as large format in my opinion). Perhaps if the book were to be offered as an online multimedia version for viewing on the web, viewers with large monitors could feel the book’s impact.

A man hurrying through Regina’s Victoria Park glances at 500 black-and-white photos of people touched by cancer. He stops to look and read the accompanying stories.

He kneels on the grass and cries.

Such is the impact of Cancer Connections, a national photo exhibition that officially launches its 2009 tour in Regina today. It features the faces of young and old, known and unknown Canadians with a common foe: cancer.

Cassandra Fisher saw the exhibit being set up Monday, so she took a closer look Tuesday morning.

“This is inspirational,” she said. “All of these people are sharing their stories and some of them are still with us and they’re hopeful. I’ve had people in my family who have cancer and that’s all you can do — have hope.”

PhotoSensitive has released touring dates for the 2009 – 2010 segment of the Cancer Connections Canada-wide Exhibition. Angelic, which we shot last year, is featured as part of the exhibit.

Cancer Connections had its national launch May 20, 2008 in Toronto, Ontario where it showed for three weeks. The show then exhibited in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and Montreal (Quebec).

The exhibit returns for 2009, launching at Victoria Park, Regina, Saskatchewan, at 12.30pm on Wednesday June 10. The exhibition will be showing there until June 28.

You are all cordially invited to the launch ceremony, though I realize that most of you are more than a bus ride from Regina and may not be able to make it. Not to worry, Cancer Connections will be continuing its journey and coming to a city (fairly) close to you over the next 12 months.

July 15 marks the launch of Cancer Connections at the Forks in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where it will be showing until August 5.

Other cities to be visited this year are:

King Square, St John, New Brunswick, August 19 – September 3.

Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, September 10 – 27.

St John’s Newfoundland (venue to be confirmed) October 6 – 25.

In 2010, the exhibit will be traveling to Vancouver, British Columbia; Calgary, Alberta; and Ottawa, Ontario.

Yesterday I had a lovely conversation with PhotoSensitive, who called to let me know that they had selected some of my work to be showcased in their Canada-wide Cancer Connections Exhibit. PhotoSensitive will be turning 20 next year. It was formed to show “how the power of the photograph can bring about social justice in such areas as poverty, illness, racism, ignorance… and show the hope found in the face of adversity”.

How timely is this? Just the other day I posted that my Canadian Cancer Society / Brides’ Project shoot was starting to get some attention (see post below). It first received a mention last fall on Wedfog (USA).

What I love about this shoot was the fact it wasn’t planned. I came up with the “angelic” concept while I was shooting earlier in the day. I had no prep. The photography was only made possible with the help of some volunteer assistants, and lovely volunteer models who patiently sat / stood very still during long exposures. So, thank you again to all who participated. And thanks of course to PhotoSensitive and the Canadian Cancer Society for organizing an exhibit in support of cancer research.

The national launch of the show was last spring. It’ll be traveling across our great country for the next two years, and will have its grand finale exhibition in our nation’s capital in 2010.

When I have more details of the exhibit’s schedule I’ll post the info here on the blog. Thanks for reading. I should note that this image is protected by copyright and cannot be reproduced without permission. Please contact the studio if you’d like to publish this and / or other images from the shoot. Thank you.
