It was pouring rain and foggy this morning when I drove to the Art Gallery of Ontario to view the Abstract Expressionist New York exhibit.

Featured are artists from the Museum of Modern Art Collection: Arshile Gorky, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Joan Mitchell, Jackson Pollack, Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman.

What did I think of it? In one word: Fantastic.

While there, I learned of Philip Guston. He was a Montreal-born painter and printer. His family moved to Los Angeles when he was a child. He was influential in Abstract Expression, and studied with Jackson Pollack under Frederick John de St. Vrain Schwankovsky.

I read a great quote by Guston:

“I should like to paint like a man who has never seen a painting”.

I often feel like that when it comes to photography. Imagine having a completely blank canvas in your mind when viewing and photographing the world, unencumbered by the influences of others or by circumstances.

That state of mind can never exist. But if it were possible, I imagine it might be beautiful and ethereal.

Busy like a bee… making lifestyle pictures

The past few weeks have seen me busy as a bee. While I haven’t been making honey, I have been making sweet lifestyle images. Okay, okay, I can tell I’ve been working with a lot of children because my writing is sugary sweet. I’ll try to stop. I had to stop myself at the grocery store earlier today. When I went to pay the cashier I almost told her she had such a cute nose I wanted to eat it for lunch. Usually this type of talk is reserved for children in front of my camera. Luckily I caught myself and just walked out of the store with a silly smile on my face.

It’s such a busy time for me. I’m working through a to-do list that seems to relate to how spring is struggling to arrive. The change of season is almost here, but no; it takes a couple steps backward to return for a step forward. You can see and hear the ever-nearing change, especially in the sky and the 3 metre waves hitting the shore.

I like the way the wind blows through the bare trees.

Winter at the Beach: Beautiful (and win a custom print!)

I was driving back from a shoot when I saw beautiful mist floating in the winter air just above Lake Ontario. It is so beautiful to see, I had to quickly exit off the highway, park the car, grab my camera and gloves, and run to the shore in fear I would miss the chance to create some images. Mist / fog appears to rise from the water, but it’s moisture in cold air turning into water droplets from the warmer air coming off the lake’s surface. It was about 10C warmer yesterday, but dipped to -17C today.

Katarina + Ryan Married | Sneak Peek

Katarina and Ryan’s wedding at Queen of Peace Church was simply beautiful. Incredible amounts of natural light and high ceilings. From Kat’s flowers to her stunning wedding gown to Ryan’s being a sharp dressed man; the day was exceptional.

We survived the heat as we hung out at Belfountain Conservation Area in Norval to create some candids and formals. The cave was amazing and a great place to sneak away for portraits, not to mention it was the place to keep cool!

Then we were off to Pearson Convention Centre for the lovely reception and dinner. Congrats to Katarina and Ryan! I’m so happy for you!

Superheroes Galore! Central Toronto Relay for Life

Friday’s fundraising event for cancer research and awareness, organized by the Canadian Cancer Society, was a huge success. The Society’s event has become so popular there are now multiple, same-day locations in Toronto: Forest Hill Memorial Park and Centennial Park. On the 25th June two more Relay for Life events will be taking place in Scarborough and North York.

The events run all night long, ending just past sunrise the next morning. And they raise hundreds of thousands of dollars.

As a photographer it’s a touching event to cover. It’s admirable to see many superhero-volunteers donating their time and experience to make these events successful. Everyone at the Relays has been touched, somehow, by cancer.

By the end of the evening, as the luminaries are being lit, there are a lot of teary eyes, some with happy tears, some with sad tears. But, all filled with hope because every year research progresses and one day a cure will be found.
