Winter at the Beach: Beautiful (and win a custom print!)

I was driving back from a shoot when I saw beautiful mist floating in the winter air just above Lake Ontario. It is so beautiful to see, I had to quickly exit off the highway, park the car, grab my camera and gloves, and run to the shore in fear I would miss the chance to create some images. Mist / fog appears to rise from the water, but it’s moisture in cold air turning into water droplets from the warmer air coming off the lake’s surface. It was about 10C warmer yesterday, but dipped to -17C today.

Professional photographers generally don’t show images directly out of the camera without doing some sort of image correction or enhancement beforehand. Myself included. There are many reasons for this (but that’s for another blog post).

However, I’m going to show one example so you can see the difference, which applies to this image only. Every image is unique.

The new Dodge Challenger SRT Hemi is the epitome of the American Muscle Car. It’s one sexy automobile. I want to thank the lovely Katarina for modelling and Ryan for supplying the Challenger. Though the final image looks like it should be part of an advertising campaign to be seen in magazines and what not, it’s from their engagement session. By the way, if you’re in the market for a Dodge Chrysler, feel free to contact me and I’ll put you in touch with Ryan.

The BEFORE:

Info: This original image of a Dodge Challenger SRT Hemi was captured using only available light late mid-afternoon. We didn't have a lot of time, as in only a few minutes. I had a lot of things to think about during the shoot: location, position of the car, direction of the sun, background, composition and how I wanted to position the model. Relationship of my camera to the subject and to the available light; that kind of thing. What type of image did I want this to be?

The Brides’ Ballet: Tell Us Which You Prefer and Win a Fine-Art Print!

Studio Update: Website Upgrades

We want your online experience with us to be second to none, and as fun as when we are photographing with you! So, for the past few weeks we’ve been implementing many back-end improvements to the Dean Oros Photo + Design website. Improvements include snazzier slideshows in all areas of the site, a cleaner and faster client area, and an improved search engine for the Image Archive. And because it’s integrated with our Blog, it’s a completely seamless experience.

We’ve also added new images to the Images of a Promise website. Sit back and watch the opening slideshow in full-screen. Our wedding art looks best when viewed BIG. Viewing The Brides’ Ballet, for example, on a 30″ colour-calibrated monitor is wicked. It’s the first image on the new slideshow, so check it out.

Thanks go out to Photoshelter, Graph Paper Press and WordPress. We couldn’t perform these upgrades without them.

Over 15 new images added to the Big Island of Hawaii archive!

Exciting news! Over 15 new images has been added to the Kona (Hawaii) Image Archive, for a current total of 50 originals. They’re all full resolution, 45mb files. These images are geared more towards traditional stock and commercial usage. Many, but not all, of the images added prior have a fine art approach.

These images focus more on the holiday resort aspect of Kona, volcanic rock, and a pretty rare look at an abandoned energy turbine farm in the southern most tip of the USA. Keep an eye out for the cow. Enjoy.

Vegging Out on The Big Island, Hawaii

The tropical ecosystem in Kona is outstanding. I was so impressed I found myself carrying my camera everywhere to capture the beauty surrounding me. You may feel the same way once you take a closer look at the following sample of images.

Found! Budapest, Hungary

Back in 2003 I visited Hungary, and travelled all over the countryside visiting wineries during one of the worst heat waves in European history. Wow, was it hot.

It was also one of the last times I photographed using 35mm film. Back then I only shot for fun.

I’ve been reviewing hundreds of images to archive, and it was enjoyable finding the Hungary negatives and scanning them into digital images. And so, they’ve been given new life, and are now part of my permanent digital archive.

Toronto Cityscape at Dusk

Downtown Toronto is starting to look a lot like Times Square in New York, especially at Yonge and Dundas, next to the Eaton Centre.

This image of the Toronto skyline, captured just before dusk, with the CN Tower in the background, shows just how busy our downtown core is. Wouldn’t this photograph look great in a commercial real estate office?
