My wedding and family bio, I felt, needed a re-write. Not a biz-sounding bio which I need for my business clients, but one that reflects my sometimes quirky and always passionate self. So I re-wrote it this morning:

“Hello. My name is Dean Oros. I’m a photographer.

I love a good story. Especially stories of love and family. Films about people falling in love are completely cool. I don’t understand the term “Chick flick”. As a photographer, capturing honest emotions shared between people is a wonderful experience. It’s magic; a creative process unlike any other. Witnessing the amazing reactions of my clients when they view my work makes me feel like I’ve the best career in the world.

In my previous life, I was an international TV / film distributor, and traveled the world. I made TV programs, too. Some of them won many awards.

If you’d like to be in front of my camera, send me an email. I’d be happy to hear from you.

Hats off to Love.”

Yes, that’s right. When we started chatting with Living Social and they told us “If a picture can say 1,000 words, then they better be the right ones: classic, elegant, and glamorous”, we knew they were the partner for us. Seriously, you have to read all the sweetness they say about us in their promo.

We’ve teamed up with Living Social to bring you a photography and fine-art greeting card collection that is to die for. Photography industry types refer to this as a U.W.C.D., or “unbelievable-wicked-cool-deal”.

If you’re a fan of our photography but haven’t yet treated yourself to you own professional shoot, this is a superb opportunity. If you’re already one of our wonderful clients ~ you know we loved photographing you ~ we hope you’ll tell your friends, family and work colleagues about it. Or book yourself another shoot; we’d love to photograph you again.

Here at the studio we’re a small team of creative people. So, we normally don’t subscribe to super-hyped promos. Our clients come to us because they love our pictures and professionalism, and feel our full fee is money well spent. We’ve a long list of accolades to our credit, which makes us super-happy. But it’s a big small world, and we know there are thousands of people who will also love our photography, if only they knew about us! We don’t have a big marketing department or budget to reach them. At times this can be frustrating.

Which means that when opportunity comes-a-knocking to introduce us to new people who might love how we see them through our cameras, we just might open our doors wide! Living Social reaches out to thousands of Torontonians every day with its emails (Hello everyone!), so it felt a bit silly to pass. And, as we did a soft launch this week of our new website for Images of a Promise, it’s a great way to celebrate with you!

For those that are seeing our photography for the first time, take a look around. The main menu at the top of our website will take you where you want to go.

All the U.W.C.D. details of today’s photography and greeting card collection is on the Living Social website and in your email, if you’re a subscriber. Feel free to call us during business hours with any questions. This one-day promotion is for Wednesday, November 10th only!

We look forward to talking with, and photographing you! Also, follow us on Twitter and Facebook for more.

The very first rock concert I attended as a teenager was Rush. Who? No, not The Who. Rush.

Rush is said to be the 3rd most influential band in rock, behind The Rolling Stones and The Beatles.

They’re Canadian. They attended the same high-schools I did. They lived in my neighbourhood. And they blew my ears out at Maple Leaf Gardens. I remember not being being able to hear myself speak as I walked out of the Gardens because my ears were ringing (and I wasn’t happy about it; even then I valued my hearing). It was my very first rock concert, and though I didn’t realize it at the time, I had just experienced an important moment in rock history.

When I watched the feature-length documentary “Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage” last night, I was amazed how many old photographs were in the movie. I couldn’t help but laugh at the hair styles back then.

The filmmakers found some archival footage that even the band was stunned to see: The band playing at Laura Secord Secondary School in Willowdale. The filmmakers also shot interviews with Rush fans Billy Corgan, Kirk Hammett, Gene Simmons, Taylor Hawkins, Rage Against the Machine’s Tim Commerford and South Park co-creator Matt Stone. And of course those familiar with Toronto will remember J.D. Roberts of The New Music, as well as the current band Death Cab for Cutie.

The film is an excellent look back at the rock music scene in Toronto. I didn’t know Rush had to go to the USA to get noticed. But get noticed they did, in a big way. It’s interesting to hear other successful rock musicians speak about this tiny trio from the burbs of Toronto and St. Catherines. I felt the film came a bit unglued towards the end. I wanted to learn more about some of the history of their other albums (they’ve now made 24 albums during their four decades together).

Either way, very entertaining and definitely worth watching if you’re a fan or not. They are such a misunderstood band. You’ll learn a lot about their story and how they came to be what they are known as today: a Canadian powerhouse rock band whose musicianship doesn’t easily fit into any typical rock-music definition. By the way, watch until the end of the credits to hear Alex’s mother say: “I love Rush. The louder the better”. Priceless.

The final result:

My reaction to being caught in front of a bright camera flash. A quick lesson on how to shoot without flash was needed!:

That is my final reaction. Funny and oh-so-flattering!

Professional photographers generally don’t show images directly out of the camera without doing some sort of image correction or enhancement beforehand. Myself included. There are many reasons for this (but that’s for another blog post).

However, I’m going to show one example so you can see the difference, which applies to this image only. Every image is unique.

The new Dodge Challenger SRT Hemi is the epitome of the American Muscle Car. It’s one sexy automobile. I want to thank the lovely Katarina for modelling and Ryan for supplying the Challenger. Though the final image looks like it should be part of an advertising campaign to be seen in magazines and what not, it’s from their engagement session. By the way, if you’re in the market for a Dodge Chrysler, feel free to contact me and I’ll put you in touch with Ryan.

The BEFORE:

<object width='590' height='411'\'>
Info: This original image of a Dodge Challenger SRT Hemi was captured using only available light late mid-afternoon. We didn't have a lot of time, as in only a few minutes. I had a lot of things to think about during the shoot: location, position of the car, direction of the sun, background, composition and how I wanted to position the model. Relationship of my camera to the subject and to the available light; that kind of thing. What type of image did I want this to be?

The FINAL Image:

<object width='590' height='411'\'>
Info: The Epitome of the American Muscle Car: The Dodge Challenger SRT Hemi

Remember, when driving, don’t exceed the speed limit. Be safe.

Which do you prefer? The colour or black & white treatment of The Brides’ Ballet? I personally can’t decide. I love them both. This image was created just a few weeks ago in the heart of downtown Toronto, Canada.

We’re having a contest. Tell me which version you like best and why, by posting a comment below.

One lucky winner will receive a complimentary print of your preferred version OR you can choose 1 of 50 images from our Hawaii Collection. See them here.

The image will be printed as a satin photographic paper print (approx 8×12″), and will include free delivery.

The winner will be announced July 4th and will be chosen via a random draw. Good luck!

Here are the two versions:
